Why is language important?
The importance of language is often overlooked, but without it everyday life would be made incredibly hard.
Simple tasks that we undertake would be made impossible and life as we know it would not exist. |
We can see the effects of a lack of communication skills by observing what happens when arriving in another country with a different spoken language. The language barriers that we face make it hard to ask for directions or to simply have a conversation with somebody.
Language enables individuals to communicate their thoughts and ideas (Rennie, 2014). Without any form of language, verbal or non verbal, we would not be able to understand one another, know how everyone is feeling or whether they need something (Emmitt et al., 2010)
There are many races present throughout the world each with its own different spoken language. This creates individuality as the different languages are like a code only known by that certain group but that can be learnt by others with practise.
Strong literacy skills are linked to the probability of having a good job and high earnings. Individuals with weak literacy skills are more likely to be unemployed or, if employed, to be in low paying jobs or that offer poor hours or working conditions.
The way we use language can be modified to suit certain situations. When speaking with friends, we use an informal, casual tone. However, when speaking with your boss, a formal, respectable tone is used (Dykes, 2007).
